Why learn to sew?

Not just a hobby, sewing is described as some people as a superpower! It can become an all consuming, occupying much of your free time and opening up many opportunities as a way to be creative, and make something useful whilst learning new skills.

I have found the sewing community to be friendly, diverse and welcoming. Instagram is a great place to find dressmakers and sewists to follow. People freely share their makes, with tips and inspiration to be found. Search by hashtag to find others that have made similar garments to yourself – a great way to research projects too.

There are many reasons people start sewing, here are some of my ideas why you should learn to sew…

  • Make clothes that fit, in colours you love
  • Care for your clothes by mending and they will last longer
  • Alter clothes to your own custom style
  • Challenge yourself to learn techniques
  • Discover its therapeutic effects, sewing is a mindful process and a good way to de-stress
  • A fantastic & creative life skill to have
  • Meet likeminded people – make sewing friends.

I run sewing classes in the city of Brighton & Hove, UK. Check out my website for more info Hove Sewing Group.

Happy Sewing!
